Nature and limitations of the scoring system
Scores and grades (A+, A, B, C, D, E) result from a proprietary algorithm based on nutritional criteria and thresholds. While these thresholds strive to reflect current scientific consensus (FEDIAF, NRC, AAFCO), they involve interpretation and editorial judgement by the publisher.
A product rated C may be more suitable for a specific animal than a product rated A or B. The score reflects a general assessment based on declared composition, but does not account for actual digestibility, nutrient bioavailability, raw material quality beyond what the label states, or the specific needs of each animal.
Scores may change over time due to algorithm updates, reference threshold modifications, or data corrections. The same product may therefore receive a different score from one period to another without its composition having changed.
Weighting coefficients (fundamental, secondary, qualitative criteria) reflect an editorial choice about the relative importance of different criteria. Other weighting choices could lead to different rankings.
Missing data for a criterion (not disclosed by the manufacturer) is counted as 0 points. This choice penalises lack of transparency but may disadvantage quality products whose manufacturer does not publish certain analyses.
Data reliability
The nutritional data presented comes from information published by manufacturers on their packaging, websites or technical sheets. PetFoodStats does not perform laboratory analyses and cannot guarantee the accuracy of this source data.
Data entry, transcription or collection errors may occur when integrating data into our database. Despite our verification efforts, some values may be incorrect, incomplete or outdated.
Manufacturers may modify their product formulations at any time without notice. The data displayed may not reflect the current composition of a product if the manufacturer has reformulated since our last update.
